LUKHANYO MDIGNI
The eponymous label established in 2015 creates everyday essentials that celebrate considerate design. The brand’s cross-cultural enriched pieces aim at building a bridge between heritage and timeless premium pieces.
Lukhanyo Mdigni’s brand stands out with looks that tell compelling stories while baring soulfulness and elegance. The South African designer combines contrasting materials and textures to create innovative silhouettes that form a disciplined and structured aesthetic. Mdigni offers a contemporary outlook on African aesthetics balanced with Asian influences to form utilitarian garments. He sees himself as a traditionalist, and places functionality and wearability at the core of his design.
Mdigni’s avant-garde pieces are a celebration of considered design and modern refinement. By locally sourcing high-quality materials such as angora kid mohair, merino wools, silks and linens, the designer expresses an integrity that he hopes will captivate his customers on a sensory level.
For his latest collection, the designer decided to honor his late friend and fellow designer Nicolas Coutts. The Coutts collection was presented on February 9th, 2021, at the menswear tradeshow Pitti Uomo. The brand’s typically loose silhouettes and neutral tones made way for Coutt’s more fitted looks and red, green, and orange tones.
Lukhanyo Mdigni has garnered global attention by creating and innovating within culturally established spaces and won the 2021 Karl Lagarfeld LVMH Prize. He doesn’t want to adhere to labels such as ‘African Luxury’, but instead wants to focus on integrating precision and consideration in each of his designs.
