WALES BONNER
The London-based brand founded by Grace Wales Bonner in 2014 merges European ideas of luxury with an Afro-Atlantic spirit into menswear and womenswear.
Grace Wales Bonner created her eponymous label in reaction to a lack of representation, wanting to explore Black culture and aesthetics with the same nuance and consideration as European aesthetics.
From the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s to the second-generation Jamaican community of 1970s London, The Central Saint Martins graduate connects the multiplicity of Black culture to traditional British sartorial style. In fact, she highlights British tailoring while confronting it to how people transform it in their own contexts.
Her forward-thinking approach results in elevated everyday clothes through which cultural pioneers and political minds of the modern African diaspora make implicit appearances.
In 2019, the multi-award-winning designer was invited by Mariah Grazia Chiuri to reinterpret Dior’s iconic ‘New Look’ silhouette.
Wales Bonner’s most recent collaboration is a capsule collection with Adidas, in which the designer explores her British-Jamaican heritage. The collaboration allows Wales Bonner to reimagine Adidas’ most iconic looks, adding her tailoring signature through crocheted stripes, oversized ribbing and Argyll patterns.
Through craftsmanship, intuition and cultural theory, Wales Bonner has become a cultural force and established a luxury brand that is rooted in heritage. By blending timeless aesthetics with elegant sportswear, Wales Bonner offers something that is familiar and deeply aspirational at the same time.
